Lesson 1: Understanding a Vertical Duct Shaft Open your Multi-Story Vertical Duct Shafts Field Guide and go to Section 1: System Overview. A vertical duct shaft is an enclosed exhaust riser that carries grease-laden vapors from the kitchen hood up through the building to the rooftop exhaust fan. You’ll commonly find these systems in hotels, hospitals, casinos, food courts, high-rise restaurants, and buildings with kitchens on multiple levels. What makes these systems different is their height, limited access, hidden elbows, fire-rated enclosures, and the distance between service points. The main lesson is this: a vertical shaft is not simply a longer piece of ductwork. It is an advanced part of the building’s fire-protection system. Before servicing one, technicians must understand the access points, hazards, drainage path, and documentation requirements.
